Sagar Mala is a Central government initiative which is planned to connect hinterland with ports. These initiatives are expected to boost development in India’s Maritime Sector and also overall growth in Indian economy.

The benefits of Sagar Mala projects are given below:

i.             Three to Four modern world class Mega ports of 200 MT capacity each will be constructed,

ii.            Regional Container Hubs will be established for transshipment,

iii.          The working group has been identified 10 Specific Coastal Economic Regions (CERs) which will promote economic growth in ports and hinterlands,

iv.          The connect will be established by rail road networks and Major Inland Waterways with CER and Hinterland,

v.           Planned to develop Inland and Mega waterways. The project included  Ganga River too,

vi.          River & coastal ports will be treated with two options as Greenfield / Brownfield,

vii.        Planned to encourage inland water transport,

viii.       Seamless dedicated backward linkages with key Transport / Infra projects e.g. DMIC, AKIC, CBIC,DFC, PCPIR ,
